Malongo & small growers

Authentic relations based on trust

OUR COMMITMENT WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH SMALL GROWERS

We create more than simple trading relations, we form authentic ties based on trust and solid partnerships with cooperatives of growers. We regularly travel to sites to reinforce these relations all around the globe.

SUPPORTING GROWERS

LONG-TERM COMMITMENT

Malongo contributes to the development of cooperatives and helps them to obtain the different types of certification. Our relations with cooperatives are contractual and based on long-term partnerships. Fair trade is not simply a matter of guaranteeing a purchasing price for small growers, it also involves a direct commitment to these growers, helping them to optimise their coffee output.

On this basis, fair trade means travelling to their sites on a regular basis, paying attention to their requirements, while considering their political and economic environment. Finally, fair trade involves helping growers to obtain the necessary infrastructures to allow their families to survive in the plantation areas.

People-to-people adventures

We have concluded partnerships with farmers in the south during our trips and meetings. These relationships are based on trust, sharing and exchange.

TRADING PARTNERS

FAIRER RELATIONS

We do not consider the small growers supplying our coffee as our “protegees”, they are trading partners, just like our European suppliers. We are entitled to expect commitments and a certain level of quality from them.

This is the innovative part of fair trade: maintain equal-to-equal relations with these growers and jointly define the terms of our partnership to ensure that all parties benefit to a maximum. We are not loyal as some kind of favour. Our loyalty guarantees that we are supplied with a top-quality product, manufactured according to trade standards, for a high purchasing price to reflect the high quality provided.

Vision

Fair trade is not a fashionable form of charity. Malongo is not an NGO striving to assist small farmers around the world. Malongo is a business which purchases, roasts and sells coffee, establishes partnerships and generates profits in order to invest in means of developing, innovating and proposing its original view of trading.

Diversification

Malongo supports projects to allow small growers to obtain complementary sources of income. Fair trade coffee plantations systematically produce other items for local sale: honey, jam, cheese and crafts items. This approach consolidates the financial situation of villages and guarantees a long-term food supply.

LOOKING FARTHER THAN COFFEE

AGRICULTURE, CULTURE, HERITAGE AND TOURISM

The fair trade tree has grown many different economic branches. Many different partnerships in various fields can be integrated into the projects managed in producing countries: training, health, art & culture, ecotourism, local products & crafts, technology, regional rehabilitation, etc.

The arrival of technology and more diverse sources of income have brought new life to villages and allowed inhabitants to plan for the future, mitigating the rural exodus generally affecting young people. The fair trade boom has also woven a whole new web of cultural gateways between these worlds and ours, expanding our horizons.
