La philosophie Malongo

business PHILOSOPHy

Quality, lasting development and innovation form the three pillars of the Malongo philosophy.

Quality

  • Every year, Jean-Pierre Blanc travels to coffee-producing countries in the hope of discovering new varieties or to boost the cultivation of exceptional coffees which – for various reasons – had been abandoned. He has a very strict approach with regard to the quality of the green coffee beans selected.
  • Shady plantations at a high altitude (1500 metres), whose berries are harvested by hand in several stages are preferred to any sort of intensive cultivation. Similarly, organically grown coffee has a strong priority over that which is grown using chemical fertiliser and pesticides.
  • This same care is applied when the coffee beans are roasted; only beans that have undergone strict controls when they arrive in Carros are processed and they are never more than one month old. The traditional method is used, i.e. the beans are roasted for more than twenty minutes to produce a rich and subtle aromatic coffee.
  • To preserve these qualities, the coffee is wrapped within one hour of roasting in sealed vacuum-packs. Malongo was distinguished in this field when it was awarded two worldwide Packaging Oscars for its Pure Origin and Grande Reserve varieties.

sustainable Development

  • By maintaining a close relationship over a long period of time with Small Growers, Malongo hopes to promote an economic model for sustainable development. Everything that fits in with this concept is therefore greatly encouraged (soil preservation, creation of welfare and school infrastructures, implementing a democratic system…) with the will – day in, day out – to allow small growers to gain more autonomy. The principles of Fair Trade have been applied to this concept by Malongo since 1992.

Innovation

  • In the field of innovation, Malongo focuses on whatever can improve customer relationships (creating an after-sales internet site, for example). Traceability and High Environmental Quality (HEQ) are also among its priorities. This is why studies are currently under way in these fields, within the framework of both experimental research and final applications. The new factory, which is scheduled to open in 2009, will integrate the most severe environmental standards.
